Social Networking for Seniors: Learn to Engage on Social Media

Carson City Library’s Technology Trainer Molly Walt will visit the Carson City Senior Center Friday, March 7, and bring with her a @ Two Digital Learning Center workshop on the use of social networking with an emphasis on popular networking sites Facebook and Pinterest; if time allows, Twitter will also be offered.

This workshop will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 am; register by calling the Senior Center’s Accounting Office at (775) 883-0703. Director for the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, Janice McIntosh showed excitement when asked about the program. "A community networking together! Having Molly Walt from the Carson City Library interact with the Carson City Senior Citizens Center clients makes our community stronger. This computer partnership will assist us to grow into the future!”

According to a Pew Research Center study seniors are the fastest growing demographic on social media sites across the globe. As of August 2013, 43% of Americans over 65 years old were using at least one social networking site. Seniors who are not active on social media may wonder why so many are joining today’s internet-savvy population. One notable benefit for seniors who live alone may find social media sites facilitate staying connected to loved ones, particularly if the relationship is a long-distance connection.

Among the top two most popular social networking sites are Facebook and Twitter. According to the website Changing the Way the World Ages, (http://changingthewaytheworldages.com/) Facebook users can create personal profiles, follow friends, join interest groups and interact by commenting and “liking” friends’ posts and pictures. Pinterest is a pinboard-style photo sharing website. You can group images into categories such as a family reunion, favorite recipes, home decorating ideas, and more.

In addition to the offered Senior Center workshop many more computer-based classes are being offered at the Carson City Library’s @ Two Digital Learning Center. All classes are free. For more information please contact Molly Walt, Carson City Library Technology Trainer at (775) 887-2244 ext. 1028 or email mrwalt@clan.lib.nv.us.
