Carson City Library has extended its technological reach by implementing extensive technology training in Lyon County through librarian-led training and workshop offerings that will improve digital literacy skills to all potential users in the region.
The Carson City Library’s @ Two Digital Learning Center staff developed a program of technology-based, hands-on digital literacy curriculum to be extended to northern Nevada regions and ultimately all libraries in the Cooperative Libraries Automated Network (CLAN).
According to Amy Geddes, Lyon County Library Director, "We are very excited to be partnering with the Carson City Library @Two Learning Center to provide much needed computer training in our communities. We hope that they are well received and that our community members will come and share other great activity ideas that they would like to see the library provide."
Beginning in February and continuing into the month of June, computer classes will be offered in all Lyon County libraries.
Offered classes include Computers for Beginners, Beginning Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Building Your Resume, Web Browsing, Pinterest, and Game Design.
Central Branch Library in Yerington will host classes on Tuesdays, from 11:30 to 12:30 pm & 1:00 to 2:00 pm, and in Smith Valley Library from 4:00 to 5:00pm. Dayton Valley Branch Library will host classes on Wednesdays, from 11:30 to 12:30 pm & 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Fernley Branch Library will host classes on Thursdays, with classes scheduled from 11:30 to 12:30 pm. Silver Stage Branch Library will host classes on Thursday afternoons, with classes scheduled from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.
In addition to classes, Open Houses will be held at the Yerington, Fernley, and Dayton Branch Libraries, as well as senior centers. These Open Houses will provide an opportunity for hands-on practice using technology and digital devices.
"With support from the Nevada State Library and Archives and Federal Library Services Technology Act (LSTA)funding, the Carson City Library is leveraging our resources with those of our sister libraries, area schools and other community groups. Together we are delivering free learning opportunities to residents who need technology training and support.
Today's average citizen needs to be competent at using digital tools to do everything from creating an effective resume sent via e-mail or an employment site upload, to creating compelling content suitable for small business marketing or public service announcements," said Carson City Library Director Sena Loyd.
"I'm most excited about extending over county lines and demonstrating the impacts of focusing Nevada's public library infrastructure, to include its knowledgeable information professionals, in order to make our entire region stronger and smarter. Together we're making a difference in bridging a digital divide that persists in people’s lives and Nevada communities that threatens both social and economic opportunities," continued Loyd.
The opportunity to extend classroom or one-on-one training will provide citizens the tools needed to become engaged in taking the digital step in everyday life.
Carson City Library’s @Two Digital Learning Center mission is to connect and equip schools, business, families and the community to deliver high quality learning opportunities that enrich time spent in school or strengthen self-directed adult learning.
We aim to support marketable skill building by bridging this area’s digital divide and in so doing create digitally literate communities. In partnership with the Lyon County Library District funding is provided by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), the only federal program exclusively for libraries. It is administered by the Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS) through the Nevada State Library and Archives.
